If the problem (smoke or fumes coming out the fireplace or stove) occurs ONLY IN WINDY conditions then THIS IS A DOWNDRAUGHT. The anti down draught cowls to use are: A) Static Cowl if your problem is not severe (found here). B) A Spinner Cowl if the your problem is severe (found here).
If the problem (smoke or fumes coming out the fireplace or stove) occurs when there is LITTLE or NO WIND then this is not a downdraught. This is a LACK OF DRAUGHT.
No anti down draught cowl will fix a lack of draught there is only ONE cowl to fix a LACK OF DRAUGHT and that is an ELECTRIC cowl called the SUPER C.
If the Chimney Problem is heat loss, over performance of chimney, excessive fuel consumption or exterior noise in the chimney, then the cowl you need to fix this is the CHIMNEY CONTROL (found here).
If the problem is rain or birds nesting then the cowl you need is the Anti Bird/Anti Rain cowl (found here).

The 50% Modified Static Chimney Draught Reducer is designed to restrict the flow of smoke / fumes exiting from your chimney pot by up to 50%.
In turn, this flow restriction slows down the rate at which;
- Fuel burns in your stove or fireplace.
- Air moves across your room towards the stove or fireplace.
The 50% Modified Static Chimney Draught Reducer is very useful when your stove or fireplace is over performing and burning too fast or excessively draughting up the chimney
Warning:
A chimney fitted with a 50% Modified Static Chimney Draught Reducer must be cleaned more regularly than a chimney without. The reason for this is that a chimney fitted with this product suffers from a more rapid soot build-up up than one without. A greater quantity of soot collecting on the walls of a chimney, especially towards the top of a chimney (as is the case when a 50% Modified Static Chimney Draught Reducer is fitted) is more likely to ignite as excess soot build-up is a fire hazard and can cause a chimney fire.
It is imperative that anyone using this product sweeps their chimney more often.
The 50% Modified Static Chimney Draught Reducer will cause a draught restriction in the flue regardless of whether it is windy or calm outside. This is important because most instances of an over performing stove / fireplace / chimney occur in windy conditions where wind moving across the top of the chimney pot causes suction in the flue (through the Venturi Effect) and increases up draught. The Venturi Effect has little effect in calm weather, therefore, up draught is not as severe.
With the above paragraph in mind, with calm weather, the 50% Modified Static Chimney Draught Reducer could cause smoke, fumes and Carbon Monoxide to escape from your stove or fireplace and we strongly recommend that you fit a carbon Monoxide alarm in conjunction with this product.
In addition, the 50% Modified Static Chimney Draught Reducer will also do the following;
Shields the chimney from light wind / air currents coming from any direction preventing down draught causing smoke to escape from the fireplace / stove or any appliance.
Highly effective at stopping the wind from entering the chimney in situations of occasional and not severe downdraught. If the problem is severe you need to install a Spinner Anti Down Draught Chimney Cowl

What the 50% Modified Static Chimney Draught Reducer will not do:
It does not allow you to regulate or increase or decrease the draught, the chimney cowl is non-adjustable. If you wish to be able to regulate how much draught there is present in your chimney, you need to install a Chimney Control. However, the Chimney Control is not suitable for stove installations and can only be used with an open fireplace.
This cowl will not prevent a very severe and continuous downdraught in your chimney – the Spinner Anti Down Draught Chimney Cowl will prevent this.
This cowl will not prevent a downdraught when there is no wind – if the problem still exists when there is no wind (in conditions such as cold, calm and frost) the problem is a lack of draught and a motorised chimney cowl is required such as the Super C Electric Fan Cowl. No anti down draught chimney cowl can solve a lack of draught.
Will not prevent a down draught if the chimney is more than 4 feet lower than the apex of the roof or 4 feet lower and in proximity to a taller structure, hedge, or tree(s)

Will fit most standard 8”-9” chimney pots – the 50% Modified Static Chimney Draught Reducer base diameter is 8” or 200mm.
